Allamakee County Museum

The Allamakee County Historical Museum is located in the original courthouse built in 1861 in Waukon, Iowa. We offer tours Monday through Friday 8:00-3:00, please allow an hour for a in-depth tour. The Museum has so much to offer from around the county and the world. The courthouse itself has a very interesting history that you can learn about on the tour that includes some fighting and stolen records! Exhibit Rooms include: Kitchen, Native American, Victorian Parlor, Fashion and Bedroom. On the upper level you can visit a Courtroom, Post Office, and Medical room. Some of artifacts you may see include hand woven basket by Emma Big Bear, Victorian Hair Art, icebox from Postville Hotel, 1930's operation table, judges bench. On display are also Native American artifacts, original courtroom chairs. Our Veterans Exhibit is still on display currently while the new museum building is under construction. After your tour be sure to stop by the genealogy department located in the basement.

The Allamakee County Historical Society & Research Center is a 501C3 non profit corporation.  Your contributions are tax deductible.

The Society was formed in 1965.  We are located in the original Allamakee County Courthouse. (1867 – 1939)
